Typographic Staging

Sound Poem by Ernst Jandl

The idea behind the typographic interpretation of Ernst Jandl’s sound poem schtzngrmm (“Schützengraben” / “trench”) is to make the chaos and crossfire of war visually perceptible. Each front side represents one side of the battlefield, while the reverse sides symbolize the temporary ceasefires between the clashes. The poem’s title, schtzngrmm, serves as the starting shot.
